When to fly over Denali, month by month

Talkeetna's planes fly over Denali in every month, but the year splits into a long summer with departures every few hours and a winter with one flight a day. Clear skies and long light peak at different times than the crowds do. Pick the month for what matters most to you.

The flying calendar at a glance

Talkeetna Air Taxi flies all year. The only days off are three holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day). Its schedule shrinks in steps as the days shorten in fall. K2 Aviation flies from the same airport, and both companies cancel when the mountain weather turns.

PeriodTalkeetna Air Taxi departuresWhat to expect
Main summer season8:30 am, 11 am, 1:30 pm, 4 pmLong days, with the most seats and the most visitors
June 2 to Sept 7The four above plus 6:30 pmEvening light and a fifth chance each day
Sept 16–3010 am, 12:45 pm, 4 pmShorter days and fresh snow up high
Oct 1 to Apr 30One flight at noon (Winter Explorer)Cold short days; 2-passenger minimum

Weather follows a rough pattern too. Late May and June are often clearer, while July is usually the cloudiest month of the summer. None of that is a promise, which is why our weather and cancellations guide tells you to keep a spare day whatever the month.

May brings long days and climbers

By May the days are stretching fast and the snow is retreating from the Susitna Valley, while the high glaciers stay deep in winter cover. Afternoons in Talkeetna are cool, often around 55 °F (13 °C), and colder still at altitude. The cruise season and the summer train schedule start in mid-May, so the first cruisetour guests arrive in the second half of the month.

May and June are also climbing season. Expeditions bound for the summit start from Kahiltna Base Camp, and from the air you can pick out the tents and the line of tracks heading up the glacier. K2's flight with a glacier landing at ~$544 follows the 44-mile Kahiltna Glacier past the camp, and the Flyer option on K2's three-option listing from ~$335 adds the base camp at 7,200 feet (2,195 m).

June and its long, clearer days

June brings close to 20 hours of daylight around the solstice, and the 6:30 pm departure starts on June 2. Many pilots and locals count late May and June among the clearer stretches of the year, though a week of cloud can settle in at any time. Seats on the morning flights go first, so book early if your dates are fixed.

Climbers are still on the mountain through June. If you want to stand on the snow near their route, our landing guide covers what the stop on the glacier is like.

Green valleys and more cloud in July

July is the warmest month in Talkeetna, with afternoons often around 70 °F (21 °C), and the busiest one for cruisetours and road trips. It is also usually the cloudiest. Flights still go on most days, but more of them stay south of the summit or end without a full circle of the mountain. If July is your only option, build in two flying days rather than one and book the first of them.

A shorter flight can be the smarter buy in a cloudy spell. The Southside Explorer at ~$351 spends its hour around the Ruth Glacier and the Great Gorge, which sit far below the summit and often stay in view when the top does not.

Rain, then color, from August into September

Late August turns rainier, and the nights grow dark again for the first time since spring. The reward comes in early September, when the birch and aspen in the valley turn gold and the alpine tundra on the north side of the range goes red and orange. Our pick, the Grand Denali flight, crosses one of the passes beside the mountain to that north side, weather permitting, so it shows the fall colors on both slopes.

Late summer evenings are the time for alpenglow on the snow, and our photography guide explains how to shoot it through the window. The 6:30 pm departure ends on Sept 7.

More air time for a changeable month

The Mountain Voyager (from ~$469) flies 75 minutes and adds the west faces of Denali and the Kahiltna Glacier to the Southside route. The extra time gives the pilot room to look for gaps in the cloud.

Fewer flights and fresh snow in late September

From Sept 16 to 30 Talkeetna Air Taxi cuts back to three departures, at 10 am, 12:45 pm and 4 pm. The cruise ships and the summer train have gone by mid-month, so the airport is quiet. Early snowfalls dust the peaks and refill the landing areas, and one review from late September describes a landing in a foot of new powder.

It gets cold. Talkeetna Air Taxi switches its clothing advice in mid-September from a light or medium jacket to a heavy jacket, hat, boots and gloves. What to wear has the full list for a landing on the snow.

Winter and the single noon flight

Between October and April the only flight is the noon Winter Explorer, which goes when two or more people have booked. A solo traveler may have to wait for someone else to book the same day. Near the winter solstice Talkeetna gets only about five and a half hours of daylight, and the sun stays low enough to light the peaks pink and gold even at midday. Cold, high-pressure spells bring some of the sharpest air of the year, but nights below 0 °F (-18 °C) are common and the drive up the Parks Highway needs winter tires and care.

Winter is not the cheap season. Talkeetna Air Taxi charges its higher winter rates from October to April, and the prices on this site are those winter rates. The cost guide has the before-and-after figures.

Matching the month to your trip

  • On a cruisetour. Your dates fall between mid-May and mid-September anyway. Fly on your first day near Talkeetna, and read the cruisetour guide for the lodge logistics;
  • Hoping to see climbers. Come in May or June, and pick a route over the Kahiltna Glacier;
  • Chasing fall color. Aim for the first half of September and the Grand Denali route to the north side;
  • Avoiding the crowds. Late September or winter, as long as you can handle the cold and a smaller timetable;
  • Driving from the park entrance. Allow about 3 h each way, and see Talkeetna or the park entrance for the options on the north side.

Season by season

Planning around the calendar

What is the best month for a Denali flightseeing tour?

Late May and June are often clearer and bring the longest days. July is usually the cloudiest month, and early September adds fall colors after a rainy late August. Any month can surprise you, so keep a spare day.

Can you fly over Denali in winter?

Yes. Talkeetna Air Taxi flies year-round, and from Oct 1 to Apr 30 it runs one flight a day at noon with a minimum of two passengers. Days are short and cold, but clear spells can be very sharp.

When do the evening Denali flights run?

Talkeetna Air Taxi adds a 6:30 pm departure from June 2 to Sept 7, on top of its four daytime flights. It gives you warm evening light and one more chance if a morning flight is cancelled.

When can you see climbers on the Kahiltna Glacier?

In May and June, when expeditions use Kahiltna Base Camp at about 7,200 feet. Routes that pass the Kahiltna Glacier, such as K2's landing flight, give you the best chance of spotting the tents.

Is July a bad time to fly over Denali?

Not bad, but it is usually the cloudiest month. Flights still go on most days. Plan two possible flying days and book the first one, so a cancellation does not end your chances.
