What a Denali flight from Talkeetna costs

A flight around Denali costs between ~$335 and ~$586 a person before any glacier landing. The gap between the cheapest seat and the dearest buys extra air time and more of the mountain, and on some flights a stop on the snow. Talkeetna Air Taxi charges more in winter than in summer, so blog figures from another season can look off.

Five flights from one small airport

Every flight in this table leaves from the Talkeetna State Airport, a few minutes from the town's little downtown. Two companies fly them, Talkeetna Air Taxi (TAT) and K2 Aviation. The figures are the "from" prices on GetYourGuide per person in US dollars, for the cheapest option of each listing. They are TAT's winter rates, so the price for a summer date can differ. Read the table as a map of the range, then check the date you want.

The cheapest seats, around $340

Two flights sit near the bottom of the range. K2's Guided Tour of Denali National Park by Air from ~$335 is one listing with three lengths. The one-hour Experience option passes within six miles of the summit, over the Sheldon Amphitheater and into the Great Gorge of the Ruth Glacier. The Flyer swings west to the Kahiltna Glacier and its climbers' base camp, and the Grand closes a full circle past the Wickersham Wall. The ~$335 figure buys the shortest option; on K2's own price list the longer two cost $410 and $495. The Denali National Park fee is included in this listing, which saves a small step.

TAT's Southside Explorer from ~$351 is the same idea from the other company, an hour over the south side of the range. It crosses the river flats of the Susitna Valley and climbs into the Great Gorge, a slot between granite walls a mile high. With 4.9 out of 5 from 201 guests it is the most reviewed of the five, and its value score is 4.9 too. What it leaves out is the west side of Denali and the long Kahiltna Glacier.

The middle band, ~$469 to ~$544

The Mountain Voyager from ~$469 adds 15 minutes and a lot of terrain. Beyond the Southside Explorer's route it reaches the west faces of Denali and the Kahiltna Glacier, about 45 miles of ice, and passes the cluster TAT calls the Southside Seven glaciers. On TAT's own list this flight costs $350 in summer and $400 in winter, or $475 and $550 with a landing.

K2's Denali flight tour with glacier landing from ~$544 is the only one of the five with the landing built into the price, which makes it cheaper than it first looks. K2's own list charges $410 for its Denali Flyer and $135 for a landing, $545 together, within a dollar of the listing. You get 105 minutes in all, a hot drink by the fireplace before boarding and an assigned window seat in a group of no more than 10.

The top of the range, ~$586

Our pick, TAT's Grand Denali flight from ~$586, is the longest flight on the page and the only TAT route that crosses to the north side of the mountain. After the Ruth and the Kahiltna, the pilot takes one of two passes beside Denali, weather permitting, out over the flat tundra of the park to the Wickersham Wall. It is rated 4.9 from 194 reviews. Value scores 4.8, a shade under the others, which is about what you would expect for the most expensive seat.

TAT's own list shows this flight at $430 in summer and $500 in winter, or $555 and $650 with a landing. The GetYourGuide figure sits above TAT's own rate, and the listing does not spell out what the difference covers. If price decides it, compare the final checkout total with the operator's quote. On the listing's side are free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead and the option to reserve now and pay later.

The long way around, from ~$586

Grand Denali crosses to the Wickersham Wall when the passes are open. Check-in is 45 minutes before at TAT's log cabin office in Talkeetna.

What a glacier landing adds

On the three TAT flights the landing is an option you pick at booking. TAT's own list shows it adding $125 a seat in summer and $150 in winter, for roughly half an hour on the snow. K2 charges $135 for the same stop. Passengers aged 16 and older who land with TAT also need a National Park pass at $15 each. It covers 7 days and must be bought online ahead of time. Over-boots come free. Our glacier landing guide covers what happens up there and when a landing gets called off.

Summer rates and winter rates

The TAT prices you see on GetYourGuide now are winter rates. Against the summer rates, the flight alone costs $50 more on the Mountain Voyager and $70 more on the Grand Denali. Whether the same rates hold next summer is something to confirm when you book. From October through April TAT flies one departure a day, the Winter Explorer at noon, and needs at least two passengers to go. Winter skies are often clear, but the days are short and cold. The season month by month sets out what each part of the year trades.

Getting to Talkeetna

The flight is only part of the bill. Talkeetna sits at the end of a spur road off the Parks Highway, about 113 road miles north of Anchorage, so most visitors drive up or ride the train. Plan on 2–3 hours from Anchorage and about 3 hours from the Denali park entrance. In summer the Alaska Railroad's Denali Star leaves Anchorage at 8:20 am and pulls into Talkeetna at 11:05 am. TAT picks up guests staying within 2 miles of downtown Talkeetna, so a night in town saves on taxis and opens up the early slots. Cruise passengers face their own timing puzzle, worked through in our cruise guide.

Flights from the park entrance

Two more Denali flights have appeared on GetYourGuide, both from the park entrance area near Healy rather than Talkeetna. Denali Air's plane loop was listed from ~$475, and TEMSCO's helicopter flight with a landing on the Yanert Glacier from ~$609. Both listings were offline when we last checked, so see whether they are back for summer. They suit travelers already sleeping at the park entrance, and Talkeetna or the park entrance compares the two bases.

Ways to spend less

  • Buy length before snow. On TAT's winter list, a Grand Denali with no landing ($500) costs less than a Mountain Voyager with one ($550). If the north face matters more to you than standing on a glacier, the longer flight gives more for the money;
  • Price K2's landing tour. At ~$544 with the landing included, set it against the total for a TAT flight of similar length plus its landing before you decide;
  • Fly early in your stay. Weather cancellations bring a full refund, but a spare day costs less than going home without the mountain. How cancellations work;
  • Count the small extras. The $15 park pass for a TAT landing and a meal in town are the usual add-ons. Headsets and over-boots cost nothing.
