Best Denali Flightseeing Tours

Most people who come to Alaska to see Denali never see the top of it from the ground. From a ski plane out of Talkeetna you fly up the Ruth Glacier, between granite walls a mile high, and often above the cloud that hides the summit from the road. Four scenic flights side by side: the long Grand Denali loop that crosses to the north face, K2's flight with the glacier landing already in the price, the one-hour Southside Explorer and the Mountain Voyager in between. What they cost, how long you are in the air, and how they fit around a cruise or a cruisetour.

Flying over Denali: the answers before you book

If a friend asked us which plane to get on in Talkeetna, this is what we would say.

Ask us which Denali flight to book and we will point you to the Grand Denali flight with Talkeetna Air Taxi, from ~$586. It is the only one of the four that crosses the Alaska Range to the north side, where Denali drops almost fourteen thousand feet in a single wall of rock and ice, and on the way it takes in everything the shorter flights see. An hour and a half in the air, two hours with the glacier landing, and 194 reviews that average 4.9 out of 5.

Want the snow under your boots without choosing options? K2 Aviation's flight with a glacier landing costs ~$544 with the landing already included, and runs 105 minutes past the Kahiltna Glacier and through the Great Gorge. On a budget, the Southside Explorer at ~$351 is the most reviewed of the four and spends its hour around the Ruth Glacier. The Mountain Voyager at ~$469 adds the west faces and the Kahiltna for a quarter of an hour more.

Coming on a cruise? The mountain is far from any port, so these flights belong to a cruisetour or to the days in Anchorage around your sailing. Check the travel times first. And read what no listing says loudly before you pay, starting with the clouds.

Our pick

The Denali flight we would book: Grand Denali with Talkeetna Air Taxi

It is the most expensive of the four. It is also the only one that flies all the way around the mountain's faces, and the reviewers who took it say the extra half hour was the part they remember.

Talkeetna: Grand Denali Flight with Optional Glacier Landing

4.9 / 5 · 194 verified reviews

You check in at Talkeetna Air Taxi's log cabin office on the edge of the airstrip, get a weather and safety briefing, and climb into a single-engine, high-wing plane where every seat is a window seat. Ten minutes after take-off the flat valley of the Susitna gives way to the Alaska Range. Your pilot talks you through it on the headset while the plane follows the glaciers in like roads: the Ruth Glacier and its Great Gorge, the long Kahiltna, the faces of Mount Hunter and Mount Foraker.

Then comes the part only this route does. Weather permitting, the pilot takes you through one of two passes beside Denali and out over the flat tundra of the park's north side, turns, and there is the Wickersham Wall, the north face, a single sweep of rock and ice the listing puts at 13,658 feet. It is a long way from the one-hour loops. Travelers give the pilots 4.9 out of 5, the value 4.8, and 96 percent of English-speaking guests gave full marks. One recent reviewer put it plainly: do the longer tour.

How the flight runs, step by step

The pilots shape every flight around the day's cloud, so no two follow quite the same line. This is the outline, from the listing and the operator:

In Talkeetna

  • Check in at the log cabin office 45 minutes before take-off
  • Weather and safety briefing, over-boots if you booked the landing

Into the Alaska Range

In the air

  • Across the Susitna Valley and its braided rivers
  • Up the Ruth Glacier and through the Great Gorge
  • Along the 45-mile Kahiltna Glacier, past Hunter and Foraker
  • Across the range to Denali's north face, the Wickersham Wall, when the weather allows
  • A glacier landing of about half an hour, if you added it
  • Back on the Talkeetna airstrip after 1.5 to 2 hours

What the price covers

The flight itself is all inclusive. The landing and the park pass are the two things to sort out before the day.

Included
  • Window seat and your own headset with the pilot's commentary
  • Weather and safety briefing before you board
  • Waterproof over-boots if you land on the glacier
  • Pickup within two miles of downtown Talkeetna
Not included
  • The glacier landing, an option you add when you book
  • A $15 National Park pass for each landing guest aged 16 or over
  • Transport from Anchorage or the cruise port
  • A promise that the summit will be out

Between us, before you go

A little advice, as one traveler to another. Book it for your first full day in Talkeetna, not your last, because the weather cancels flights here more often than anywhere else you will fly on vacation, and a free new date is only useful if you are still in town. Buy the park pass online the night before if you add the landing. And bring sunglasses, even on a grey morning. Above the cloud and on the snow, the light is much brighter than anything you saw on the drive up.

If you come on a cruisetour, ask at your lodge how the shuttle to Talkeetna runs before you pick a time. The flights leave from the airstrip, and some lodges are an hour away.

The mountain you will be flying around

Denali stands 20,310 feet (6,190 m) above sea level, the highest summit in North America, and it rises roughly 18,000 feet from the lowlands around it, more than Everest does from its base. A mountain that size makes its own weather, which is why so many visitors leave without seeing the top. From the air your odds improve a lot, because the planes can climb above the low cloud that sits in the valleys. The longer the route, the more chances the pilot has to find a clear face, and that is one more reason we lean toward this one. How the weather calls work is in our guide.

Who we would not send on it

Anyone whose budget stops at the one-hour loops, because the Southside Explorer sees the Great Gorge and the Ruth Glacier for about $235 less. Travelers who feel uneasy in small planes and would rather start short. And guests who mainly want to stand on a glacier, who get the landing included on K2's 105-minute flight without paying for the crossing to the north side.

Book it if

You want to see Denali from more than one side, you are in Talkeetna for at least a day with room to rebook, and you would rather pay once for the long flight than wonder afterwards.

Skip it if

You want the lowest price, a landing in the price, a gentle first flight or your only chance is a rushed cruisetour morning.

Cruise guests

Denali flightseeing for cruise passengers

Denali is not a port of call. It sits more than a hundred miles inland, so cruise guests reach it in one of two ways: on a cruisetour with nights at lodges near the park, or on a day or two in Anchorage before or after the ship. Both can work. The question is how far your bed is from the Talkeetna airstrip.

Cruisetour · Talkeetna side

A lodge or hotel near Talkeetna

Princess and Holland America cruisetours, plus independent stays

Up to 1 hby road or lodge shuttle to the airstrip

The easiest case. Hotels in town are minutes from both air services, and the McKinley Princess lodge runs its own shuttle schedule. Ask at the desk which flight times match the shuttle before you book.

Before or after the cruise

Anchorage, Whittier or Seward

Most Gulf of Alaska cruises start or end at one of the two ports

2–5 hby road to Talkeetna, depending on where you start

From Anchorage it is a long day trip by car or train. From the ports, add the drive to Anchorage first. A night in Talkeetna makes the whole thing calmer and gives the weather a second chance.

How far each starting point is from the planes

  • By road
  • By train
  • Can take longer

Road times are typical summer figures from the operators and Alaska mileage charts; road works on the Parks Highway can add time. The train runs in summer only (mid-May to mid-September). Add 45 minutes of check-in before any flight.

  1. Find your Talkeetna dayLook at the cruisetour itinerary for the night closest to Talkeetna, or plan a night there before or after the ship. That is the day to fly.
  2. Pick a morning slotSummer departures run from 8:30 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon, plus an evening slot in high summer. An early slot leaves room to try again later the same day if the cloud is down.
  3. Book, then hold a backupAll four cancel for free up to 24 hours before, and a weather cancellation means a refund or a new date. A second day in the area turns a cancelled flight into a postponed one.
  4. Pack from the cabinWarm layers, sunglasses and closed shoes, even in July. Up on the snow it is colder than in town. Our packing list has the rest.

How to choose

How to pick the right Denali flight

The mountain is the same from every plane. What changes is how long you stay up, which faces you see, whether you land, and how the flight fits into the days around it.

How long in the air

One hour on the Southside Explorer, an hour and a quarter on the Mountain Voyager, an hour and a half on Grand Denali. K2's flight takes 105 minutes with its landing. Each step up in length adds faces of the mountain that the shorter flights miss. The routes compared.

To land or not

A glacier landing adds about thirty minutes and roughly $125 to $150 at the operators' own rates. You step out in over-boots onto snow surrounded by peaks, often in total silence. K2 includes it; on the three TAT flights you choose it. Is it worth adding?

Which side of the mountain

All four see the south side with the Ruth Glacier and the Great Gorge. The Mountain Voyager and K2 add the Kahiltna Glacier and the west faces. Only Grand Denali crosses to the north side and the Wickersham Wall, when the weather lets the pilots through.

Talkeetna Air Taxi or K2

Both fly from the Talkeetna airstrip with ski planes for up to ten guests, every seat at a window. TAT checks you in at a log cabin with a deck; K2 serves coffee by the fireplace and shows a short film first. Ratings are close, 4.8 to 4.9 across the board.

Your schedule

In summer there are four or five departures a day, in winter one at noon. A morning flight leaves room for a second try. If your cruisetour lodge is at the park entrance, Talkeetna is three hours away; read this first.

Price and season

The prices on this page are today's winter rates. Talkeetna Air Taxi charges about $50 to $70 less per flight in summer, so check the price for your date. What each flight costs and what is extra, in one table.

Talkeetna: Grand Denali Flight with Optional Glacier Landing

Talkeetna Air Taxi's longest flight takes in the whole south side of the range, the Ruth Glacier, the Great Gorge, the Kahiltna and the west faces, then crosses through a pass to the north side for the Wickersham Wall. Add a glacier landing and it becomes a two-hour trip.

  • Rating4.9/5 (194 reviews)
  • LandingOptional, about 30 minutes
  • StrengthsThe only route to the north face, the most of the range
  • Ideal forClear days and travelers who want the whole mountain

Good to know: The crossing to the north side only happens when the weather allows it. The listing price is for the flight alone; the landing costs extra and needs a $15 park pass for everyone aged 16 and over. At current rates it is about $235 more than the one-hour flight. Which route suits you?

Before you fly

Eight things about Denali flights that no listing puts in big letters

None of these sits at the top of a booking page, and every one of them changes your day in Talkeetna.

What you should know

  1. The summit hides most days. The figure locals repeat is that only about three visitors in ten see the top of Denali. From the air the odds are much better, because the planes climb above the valley cloud, but nobody can promise the summit. How the weather calls work.
  2. Fly on your first day, not your last. Pilots decide on the day whether to go. If they cancel you get a refund or a new date, which only helps if you are still in the area to use it.
  3. The landing is decided in the air. Even on a flying day, soft snow or cloud on the glacier can rule out the landing. Talkeetna Air Taxi then charges for the flight time you actually had. More on the landing.
  4. You do not choose your seat. Seats are assigned by the plane's weight and balance, not by who booked first. Every seat is a window seat, so it matters less than it sounds.
  5. Talkeetna is at the end of a spur road. It is two to three hours from Anchorage and about three from the park entrance, where many cruisetour lodges are. Work out how you get to the airstrip before you pick a time.
  6. Winter rates apply right now. From October to April the prices are higher than in summer, and there is one departure a day at noon. Check the rate for your own date. The season month by month.
  7. It is colder on the glacier than in town. On a landing you step out onto snow surrounded by ice, with a breeze off the peaks. A warm layer, sunglasses and closed shoes are the minimum, even in July.
  8. Leave the big bag behind. The cabins are small, backpacks and purses are discouraged, and drones are banned at the airport and in the park. A camera with a spare battery is all you need. Photo tips for the window.

We were on a Princess cruisetour with one night at the lodge near Talkeetna, so we booked the 8:30 Grand Denali flight and hoped. The summit came out just as we crossed to the north side. The pilot banked so both sides of the plane got the Wickersham Wall. My husband, who never says anything, said "wow" four times.

Drove up from Anchorage for two nights in Talkeetna. First morning was cancelled for cloud, which they told us at check-in with a straight face and a full refund. Second morning we flew K2 with the landing and stood on the snow in the Ruth Amphitheater in total silence. I have climbed fourteeners for twenty years and that was the biggest landscape I have ever stood in.

MKMichael K. · Denver, Colorado

The top of Denali stayed in its own cloud the whole time, which was a shame after the drive up. We still saw the Great Gorge and the glaciers, and those were amazing on their own. Four stars because nobody can control the weather, and they did warn us.

Our cruise ended in Whittier and we added three days on land before flying home. Took the train from Anchorage to Talkeetna in the morning, walked to the airstrip, did the Mountain Voyager with the landing at 1:30, had a beer in town and caught the train back. Long day, but the best one of the whole trip, including the glaciers from the ship.

Holland America cruisetour. Our lodge was at the park entrance, three hours from Talkeetna, so we booked a flight for the day the itinerary had us passing through on the way north. Good to know

What you are flying around, and who flew it first

Five minutes of reading, and you will know what you are looking at when the plane turns into the Ruth Glacier. Your pilot will be impressed.

From Talkeetna, on a clear day, the Alaska Range looks like a white wall on the horizon, and the biggest block in it is Denali. The mountain stands 20,310 feet high and rises about 18,000 feet from the lowlands at its feet, a bigger rise than Everest's from its own base. Everything you see from the plane, the weather included, comes from that one huge lump of rock pushing up into the sky.

01Two names for one mountain

The Koyukon Athabascan people called the mountain Denali, usually translated as "the high one". A gold prospector named it after William McKinley in 1896, and that became the official name. In 2015 the federal government changed it to Denali, and in 2025 an executive order changed it back to Mount McKinley. The national park around it is still Denali National Park and Preserve, and most pilots in Talkeetna still say Denali. So do we.

02A mountain that makes its own weather

Moist air from the Gulf of Alaska runs into a range this high and turns into cloud, often right around the upper slopes. That is why the summit can hide for days while the sky over Talkeetna is blue, and why the pilots study the forecast and the webcams before every flight. When the planes do go, they rise over the valley murk, which is why the view from the air so often beats the view from the road. When the sky is clearest is in our guide.

03The Great Gorge

The Ruth Glacier squeezes through a narrow canyon on its way down from the mountain, and the flights all go through it. The granite walls rise about a mile above the ice, and the ice itself is thousands of feet thick, so from the top of the walls to the bedrock under the glacier is almost two miles. From a small plane in the middle of it, the walls look close enough to touch.

The bush pilots who land you on the glacier also fly the climbers to base camp, and in early summer you may see their tents on the snow.

04The pilot who started glacier landings

Talkeetna's flying tradition goes back to bush pilots like Don Sheldon, who from the 1950s landed small planes on the glaciers below Denali to supply climbers and rescue them. The great bowl of ice at the head of the Ruth Glacier, the Sheldon Amphitheater, carries his name, and most flights pass through it. When your pilot sets the skis down on the snow, they are doing what Sheldon worked out more than sixty years ago.

05Climbers on the Kahiltna

Every spring, climbers from around the world fly from Talkeetna to a base camp at about 7,200 feet on a fork of the Kahiltna Glacier, then spend two to three weeks working their way up to the summit. The routes that pass along the Kahiltna, like K2's landing flight and the longer TAT flights, may show you the camp in May and June. Look for a cluster of tents and a runway stamped into the snow.

06A town at the end of the road

Talkeetna sits where three rivers meet, at the end of a spur road off the highway between Anchorage and Fairbanks. It began as a mining and railroad town and became the base for Denali climbing expeditions, and its small historic main street still has more log cabins than shops. The airstrip is a short walk from downtown, so between flights there is time for coffee, a look at the rivers, and a good view north if the mountain is out.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about Denali flightseeing

Fourteen questions we hear again and again, with the full answer.

How much does a Denali flightseeing tour cost?

From about $350 to $600 per person online at current winter rates. The one-hour Southside Explorer starts at ~$351, the Mountain Voyager at ~$469, K2's flight with a glacier landing included at ~$544 and the Grand Denali loop at ~$586 before a landing. A glacier landing adds roughly $125 to $150 on the flights where it is optional. Every price and extra is in our cost guide.

Which Denali flight is the best?

For most travelers with a day to spare in Talkeetna, Talkeetna Air Taxi's Grand Denali flight. It covers the most of the range and is the only one that crosses to the north side and the Wickersham Wall. For a landing without choosing options, K2's 105-minute flight. On a budget, the Southside Explorer, which is also the most reviewed.

Where do the Denali flights leave from?

All four flights on this page take off from the state airport at Talkeetna, close to the town center and two to three hours north of Anchorage by road. A few flights and helicopter tours also start near the park entrance by Healy, but the two on GetYourGuide were offline when we last checked. Talkeetna or the park entrance compares them.

Can I do a Denali flight from my cruise ship?

Not on a regular port day. Denali is far inland, and ports like Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway are hundreds of miles away. Cruise guests fly on a cruisetour, from a lodge near Talkeetna or with a transfer from the park entrance, or during a stay in Anchorage when the cruise starts or ends in Whittier or Seward.

Will I see the summit of Denali?

Nobody can promise it. Locals like to say that fewer than a third of visitors see the summit from the ground. From the air the chances are much better, because the planes climb above the low cloud, and on a clear day you fly within a few miles of the top. If the weather is too poor to fly, the operators refund you or offer a new date.

Is the glacier landing worth the extra money?

For most people, yes. Standing on the snow in silence, surrounded by peaks, is the moment reviewers mention most. It adds about thirty minutes and roughly $125 to $150, plus a $15 park pass on the Talkeetna Air Taxi flights. K2's flight includes the landing in its price. Landings depend on snow and weather and can be cancelled even when the flight goes.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The pilots decide on the day. If the operator cancels for weather, you get a full refund or a free new date. Talkeetna Air Taxi also adjusts the price if it flies a shorter route or skips the landing because of marginal weather. Plan your flight for your first day in the area so a cancellation can become a postponement.

How long does a Denali flight take?

One hour for the Southside Explorer, 75 minutes for the Mountain Voyager, 90 minutes for Grand Denali and 105 minutes for K2's flight with its landing. A glacier landing adds about 30 minutes to the TAT flights. Allow 45 minutes for check-in before take-off and a few minutes to hand back over-boots afterwards.

When is the best time of year to fly over Denali?

Summer has the most departures, four or five a day from May to September. Late May and June are often clearer than July, which tends to be the cloudiest month, and late August turns wetter. Talkeetna Air Taxi also flies in winter, once a day at noon from October to April, with cold, clear days and short light. Month by month in the guide.

Talkeetna Air Taxi or K2 Aviation?

Both are long-running Talkeetna air services with ski planes for up to ten guests and a window seat for everyone, and both are rated 4.8 to 4.9 on GetYourGuide. Choose by route rather than by company. TAT has three of the four flights here, including the long Grand Denali loop; K2's listed flight includes the glacier landing in its price.

What should I wear on a Denali flight?

Long pants, closed shoes, a warm jacket and sunglasses. From May to mid-September a light or medium jacket is enough for the plane, but on a glacier landing you stand in snow with a cold breeze, so add a hat and gloves. From mid-September to April, dress for winter. The operators lend over-boots for the landing.

Is a small-plane flight scary or bumpy?

Usually not. Talkeetna Air Taxi describes the flights as smooth, with turbulence rare, and says most guests need no motion sickness medicine. The pilots fly the range every day and do not take off in poor conditions. If you are nervous, start with the one-hour Southside Explorer. Tips for nervous flyers are in our guide.

Can children fly over Denali?

Yes. Talkeetna Air Taxi takes all ages and has child prices, and K2 Aviation flies children under two in an FAA-approved car seat, which it provides on site. Seats are assigned by weight and balance, so families may not all sit in the same row, but every seat has a window.

Can I cancel for free?

Yes, on all four flights on this page, up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund, and all four offer reserve now, pay later. If the operator cancels because of weather, you get a full refund or a new date, whenever that happens.
